Avebury, England
Avebury is a lesser known, but equally impressive stone circle in England. The town of Avebury was built before the circle was protected by English Heritage, and consequently a road was built smack through the center of it leading to, funny enough, the local pub.
Unlike Stonehenge, you can walk right up to the stones of Avebury, touch them, and really experience the history of the place without being behind a rope and on the designated footpath. Also, virtually ALL the tourists are at Stonehenge and you can essentially have this place to yourself.
It is definitely in a different state of preservation, but in my opinion a much better experience. Whether it will last as long, though, I dont know.
