Forgetting the Lyrics
My daughter was drawn to the music coming from the guitar William sat and played. He was drawn to what he described as the "depth and innocence" in her big baby eyes. I gave her some money to put in his open guitar case.
He is frequently seen around town, and people kind of laugh off the fact that he can never seem to remember the words to the songs he sings. He feels as though he must portray a hardened and hurt character to "the public", but when I spoke to him and shook his hand and listened to him speak, I could tell there was not a hard feeling in his soul whatsoever...even though life has delt him a really raw hand.
He used to be a primary school teacher. He had a wife. And children. A family. He did not go into much further detail, and he quickly retreated back into his world as I walked away with my daughter. Later on as we passed him again he looked up and gave us a small laugh and smile...I really don't know if he remembered us from just awhile before or if it was the same look he gave everyone that quickly hurries past his open guitar case.
