Every thing in your article is true, you don't need fancy equipment for this. However you do need enough DOF to get a sharp shot, and that requires shooting at f16 or so. Your examples are slightly soft. "Pros" use a strobe (even a cheap-ass one) b/c they can give you a large amount of light for a split second, which means you can use a low ISO and higher shutter speed along with a smaller aperture so it is all in focus. The strobe is also firing at usually at least 1/1250, which will stop action cold. Just some thoughts...but you are right, you often don't need the "expensive" equipment until the client demands it.
