I found that it was not easy to get a really sharp, large image of the moon. It takes a long lens, which magnifies all camera motion. I had to lock up the mirror on my SLR, weight the tripod and drape a two-pound bean bag over the top of the lens and camera body. Using an electronic shutter release to further reduce vibrations, I experimented to find the slowest shutter speed that would not show the motion of the moon itself across the sky. This allowed me to shoot at f16, a sharpness "sweet spot" for my 400mm+teleconverter combination. Used on a Sony digital camera, I was shooting at an effective focal length of 1200mm.
