Doris, 98 and counting
This is Doris Boyden. She is 98 years old and she resides at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King. Her late husband Al fought in Germany during World War I.
Doris was the first person I talked to as part of a project to talk to and photograph veterans. I am a veteran myself and thought it would be good to talk to some of the older veterans.
I taped our conversation, so a little bit later I will put some more info up here.
I talked to three residents today and plan on going back in a week or so to talk to some more veterans.
I was delighted to talk to her. She was so lucid, that it almost took me by surprise. I ended up talking to her for close to 45 minutes. She grew up in Seymour, Wisconsin right near the Oneida Reservation. Her father owned a general store where everyone bought their goods. Doris said that her father was always so nice to the Indians, in a time when not everyone was.
She made me smile so often that my face hurt. :)
