Te Ika A Maui

Clouds over Piha Beach close to Sunset. These were taken on Monday this week. It's Autumn and the sunset was late afternoon.

A bit of a patriotic story for you....

The big black cloud reminds me of the shape of New Zealand's North Island which is named in Maori "The Fish of Maui". Maui was a figure of legend in Maori mythology. The story is that Maui caught a fish from the pacific ocean. His canoe was the South Island, it's anchor the small island further South and the fish the North Island. The head of the fish is where Wellington is. The fins of the fish left and right, the tail the Northern spit.

Funnily enough the Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa translated Land of the Long White Cloud.
