Sometimes you take a phoot because you planned it. Sometimes you seek one out. And sometimes you make an image because something spurs you to.

It's February, cold, and I'm rucking some gear to Grand Central Station. I'm walking past the historic Church of St. Agnes, between Lexington and Third Avenues, on my way to Grand Central.

My camera is out, just in case. As I approach the front doors of the church, two old women are passing by, deep in conversation. Then, out of both habit and respect, but never breaking conversation stride, they bless themselves as they pass this statue of St. Agnes.

This is the tradition of another generation. I had a landscaping boss that did the same thing when we passed a church on the way to the next job. I've often caught my mother and father putting a closed fist on their heart when we would pass a church. I don't see that much anymore and these women gave me pause.

Maybe not my most engaging photo, but I'm going to remember that little slice of New York time, when two old women indavertently gave me a peek into their history.
