Papa & Cyclone
Berto "Papa" and his sister, Marciel "Cyclone" grew up with a back yard full of sugar cane. Marciel is appropriately known throughout the Batey as Cyclone because her mother gave birth to her soaking wet on the day of Hurricane George. George swept through Las Pajas on September 22, 1998, flattening all homes built out of wood and scrap metal and leaving only the barracks standing.
In the Las Pajas and the Lucky Haitians photo essay.

Reed this series is just wonderul. The narrative really enhances the documentary photo style and the superb lighting elevates the pictures to something else ....entirely special and somehow at odds with the ordinaryness of the subject matter.

Have i missed something?? Is there something wrong with you people. "NICE LIGHTING" are you serious?
I thought images were to provoke thought, inspire action. Do you not care about the issue? Oh so I think that if a mutilated woman in the Congo was lighted right that would be artistic as well?
Thank god for the powerful words, thank god for those of us who read! Keep doing your thing! -

oops, i just read the above and now i feel bad. sawry. it's just the first thing that strikes you about these photos is the lighting - it's not your classic photojournalist lightning. the contrast btwn the lighting and the subject matter is what grabs you at first. and i think reed's done that on purpose. but, apparently, there's also some risk involoved in that maybe people won't go beyond the beauty of the photos to see what's deeper...

What a beautiful picture. Both the kids facial expressions, as well as the lighting.
