Yoni Luis

Yoni moved from Haiti to Las Pajas four years ago. Yoni’s cousin helped get him declared a citizen two years later. If someone asks him if he is Haitian or Dominican, Yoni responds, "Soy legal" (I'm legal). He cuts sugar cane, earning about 300 pesos every two days. Yoni is also the proud new father of his two-month-old son.

When I saw the thumbnail on the jpgmag homepage, I thought he was a statue. Once I opened it up, I still wasn't all that convinced that he wasn't. A statue, unlike a human body, only shows a few dimensions which is the sculptor's intention so that he captures a single story or emotion or expression. However, photographing a sculpture isn't very creative which is why I think this photo is so brilliant. I'd imagine that in real life, Yoni is a living, breathing statue whose expression always tells a story. Good work. Good eye.
