This picture was taken in the interior parts of Calicut, Kerala, India which is surrounded with coconut and banana plantations.

The caterpillar is a geometrid moth (i.e. in the family Geometridae, commonly called "inchworms"). They are attractive little gray or yellow (sometimes other colors) moths. There are tens of thousands of species of geometrids (maybe over 100,000, we'll never know because we are losing tropical species so fast). These are particularly species found in India.

This is the information provided by Dr. Lee Dyer who maintains the website http://www.caterpillars.org.
