Lessons in Sustainability (Echo)

Columbus, Indiana; They've built a modern office building within the structure of a 1800s brick building that had more than seen its day. They left as much of the older structure as possible & built the modern office inside the space of the older building, using as many of the bricks from the older building as possible in building the new structure. The result is beautiful. The space around the outer perimeter of the new building and the inner perimeter of the old structure a courtyard for employees to relax. The older structure provides shading in the courtyard, yet is its filled with light from the broken out windows. The old structure also serves as a berm making the area a peaceful place to gather thoughts, talk with a co-worker, or simply relax. Why tear something completely down just to build something up? We should all be so forward thinking!

In the ECHO: Lessons in Sustainability photo essay.

What a beautiful photo! And you're spot on about using classic old structures in this way. Preserve history!

This is a wonderful photograph. I love the colors and the brick. Old buildings have so much more character, but the new one within will have a double history and character!

I would love to see more of this building. What a great idea. I was thinking about doing that for a studio. Just build a box on the inside of the old structure. I love the rustic feel.

Hey this is a really great way to "recycle" wonderful old buildings. I salute Columbus for their creative approach to preservation without smothering the building in ridiculous restrictions. I think old buildings like this can have a much longer and productive life with a bit of help and support from modern usages and construction techniques. Bravo, Columbus! Thanks for sharing this.
