Pow Wow Highway
I can't begin to tell some one from a big city that is green and has tons of signs steering us by our personal desires. Nor can I think of a vision of where I go for someone that takes the "A train. or Bart". There is no car commercial you've seen for at new foreign car on television out there as a promotional bit for a car commercial that says fun and escape". There are no rooster tails kicking up from the ground making edging you to buy one as gas prices continue to go up. You can't even tell a friend where you are and your cell phone is just a piece of junk.
An elder comes of from the ground. He is one hundred and seven, his brother is ninety eight, there is a young boy with them. All three are standing in the nude with a piece of leather tied around their appendage and covered in red dirt. I know this is not Soho or, San Francisco or a blue website for geeks.
I drive up, turn my Ipod off, my last device of courage, and ask if they know the way to Navajo 383. There is a stare down for at least a minute. They are looking at my bag of peanuts. I offer them. the bag of peanuts, they eat the salty shell with peanut.
I'm standing in an area where the last sign I saw I could not pronounce. Standing there I discover it means the center of someone's universe other than mine. My GPS is spinning around like I'm on Mars or I just fell down the rabbit hole and I'm in a scene from Alice in Wonderland. .At this time I was wondering when was the last time NASA showed us a live picture of the earth from space.
The old man interrupts my day thoughts and speaks in a language that sounded from off the world. He pointed to the horizon. The young boy said the red rock. I smiled and turned around and drove off slowly.. I got the feeling I was on sacred ground. In fact I was after I found out that this was the mountain for the Navajos that means the center of their Universe.
The road was wash board and the cry for a rest room becomes apparent.. Being on sacred land means you have to hold on.
There is no lady's room, or men's room facility. In the end I did find the beginning of a road that would ead me to some other place sacred and I also learned that if you can't read you better learn to understand what land marks are about. BUt even more a respect for the meaning of prayer of another man's culture.

Excellent composition -- the decision to include the sign makes this shot.

The story makes this shot. Without it, it would have no meaning, but with it opens up, thoughts, meanings and provokes questions. Questions to ones self as to how we consider and view others.

Reminds me of my visit years ago to Hopi land, without a camera unfortunately. But what I experienced could not be captured on film. Your words brought the memories back to me.
