Originally built in -1643 ---the cross was then made of wood then--- by PaulChomedey sieur de Maisonneuve to thank God for having spared everyone from the Ville-Marie floods. Rebuilt in 1924


Composed of metal parts, this structure, which was completed in September 1924, measuring 102 feet high and 30 feet wide. Funding for this work has been collected in part by popular subscription, ie the sale of commemorative stamps de la Croix du Mont-Royal by about 85000 students.

The City of Montreal has always ensured the maintenance of the cross even though the Corporation of St. John the Baptist in owner remained until June 2004. Since then, the cross was officially granted to the City by donation.

The lighting of the Cross
At its first illumination in 1924, 240 bulbs of 50 watts were necessary to illuminate the cross, ie 120 bulbs on each side. However, in 1959, another electrification system is set up then requiring 249 incandescent light bulbs (one less on one side, because of a scale). In fact, until that time, the changes of bulbs carried by hand.

Some thirty years later, ie since the beginning of 1990, the illumination of the cross is done through a system of optical fibres: 32 projectors running from light to hundreds of fibre optic that converge in turn to a kind of half-sphere containing the illusion of the bulb (156 of these half-spheres are used).

The changes in color, used during events, and are obtained by the introduction of colour filters (blue, red and purple) to each of 32 projectors. So far, this intervention always requires the help of a technician who must climb on the cross to place filters.

Érigée en 1924 à la suite d’une collecte de fonds organisée par la Société Saint Jean Baptiste, la Croix du Mont-Royal commémore le geste de Paul Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve, d’avoir planté une croix en bois à cet endroit en 1643 afin de remercier Dieu d’avoir épargné Ville-Marie des inondations.

Le financement de ces travaux a été en parti recueilli par souscription populaire, c’est-à-dire la vente de timbres commémoratifs de la Croix du Mont-Royal par quelque 85 000 écoliers.

La Ville de Montréal a toujours assuré l’entretien de la croix bien que la Société Saint-Jean Baptiste en soit demeurée propriétaire jusqu’en juin 2004. Depuis cette date, la croix a officiellement été cédée à la Ville par donation.
