Car Toss

I have been following JPG for several months but only recently joined. I intended to add some of my own but never decided on exactly what or when. So I saw the "Camera Toss" theme and was intrigued by the challenge. This was something completely new! I had no idea how to do it; I just knew I had to try it. I read the how-to article by Katie Funk and I highly recommend it.

Armed with my Canon Rebel and newly acquired knowledge, I set out to get some great shots. I held the strap, set the timer and let it go. The shutter was too slow. I reset and tried again. It was way too fast. There was nothing to show any movement or hint of what was going on. I finally settled on 1/125 of a second. I was ready to go again. I had my target, focused, set the timer and tossed! I turned it to view my new image and found it was...sky. I tried again and...sky. A third toss revealed...sky with a little piece of my target. This was more challenging than I thought. I spent a good part of the day perfecting my aim only to find that the axis of rotation was at the lower corner of the camera resulting in the clearest portion in one tiny corner of my image. I adjusted my tossing posture...numerous times. Finally I thought I had it down as my wife drove down the road toward the house. I stepped into her path (fortunately she was not upset with me that day), set... and tossed! I saw the bewildered look on her face as she saw me throw my prized possession into the air, letting it fall until the strap saved it from an untimely demise. I quickly recovered it and looked to see the capture (half expecting to see...sky). I was thrilled to see the shot and showed it to my wife. The look I got was similar to the look when she saw me toss the camera.

I explained the theme and challenge and now we have both been looking at different targets. We did the flower fields in Carlsbad and the Gaslamp District in San Diego. So far this one is still my favorite.

Thanks to JPG (and special thanks to Katie Funk) for all the fun. This is what keeps me coming back.

Love this pic...although the process nearly gave me a heart attack!
