This was the only natural falls on the Mississippi river.
Due to flour milling activity it collapsed in the mid 1880s.The Army Corps of Engineers put supports under, initially mad of wood, now it is concrete and steel. The falls was needed for power generation. today it is needed so barges can navigate through the locks and go upstream from here. It is also a nice tourist attraction for people coming to Minneapolis. Locals also enjoy visiting here.
