Freshwater Spring, Laguna Bacalar
This bubbling spring is located in the shallows of Laguna Bacalar, a 35-mile long freshwater lake on the southwest Yucatan Peninsua near Chetumal, Mexico. It is surrounded by pristine jungle, with very little development or tourism. The lake is also known as the Lake of Seven Colors. The water changes shade with the depth of the lake, the reflections from the jungle canopy on its shores and its shallow limestone floor, causing the water to glow tourquoise, blueberry and all shades in between. Developers are eyeing this area for the next expansion of tourism in the Yucatan, while the locals are negotiating with the central Mexican government to develop only eco-tourism and adventure tourism around the lake because of its purity. Several ruins of great Maya civilizations can be explored in this area, such as Becan, Xpuhil, and Dzibanche, and all are uncrowded and serene.
