The Vejigante character from Puerto Rico is a crowd pleaser, both on the island during Carnival and the airport right after you arrive and go to the baggage claim terminal.

They are supposed to scare away evil spirits,The name come from the word Bladder in spanish "Vejiga" and Big in spanish "grande"- Big Bladder:

from the custom of blowing up and painting a bladder, or vejiga, to scare small children.

These kind of masks are not the only type of art Puerto rico has,but one of the oldest because it comes back from Puertorican's african roots.

In the a day as a Vejigante photo essay.

Also in the story Traveling to Puerto Rico.
