“Iconoclastic performer and writer whose taste, conviction, identity and discourse are uninformed by normative culture or the prevailing dictates of whatever constitutes the zeitgeist”, as he is describing himself on his MySpace page, Theo was one of the individuals who responded to an ad in Craigslist to have portraits taken at their homes. Of the many encounters I’ve had with total strangers, meeting Theo was one of the very pleasant ones.
After welcoming me – a stranger to him as much as he was a stranger to me – in his home, Theo immediately offered me some coffee as he just made a fresh pot. Politely declining, Theo would offer me some Greek yoghurt and was pleasantly surprised that I was familiar with this delicious treat. I don’t know anything personal about Theo but I know that I felt this when I met him. It is a phrase which usually is used automatically and fairly meaningless. However, in this case I truly meant it:
“Theo, it’s very nice meeting you!”
