Behind Those Trees
Hidden just over the ridge of Oakland hills is Redwood Regional Park.
Back in the 1800s, the park was scene of extensive logging that helped supply the building materials in the booming San Francisco and the Bay Area.
Home to my favorite tree - Sequoia Sempervirens, a.k.a. Coast Redwood, the park's over 1,800 acres also has other evergreens, chapparal and grassland. It is a home to many species of wildlife, such as the rare golden eagle and striped racer snake. Even the shy mountain lion will make an appearance every now and then.
Literally just 3 minutes away from where I live. It's reassuring to be able to find refuge amidst the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Oakland.
