Believe it or not, wine glasses are hard to smash - hard to smash they way you want anyway. I couldn't swing the hammer too fast because I'd risk missing the glass and I wanted to make sure the hammer landed in the frame where I wanted it. Also, I wanted the stem of the glass to remain intact so people could tell what the object is... was. I ended up stacking pieces of broken glass on top of a broken stem. Then, with a fairly light punch of the hammer, the stacked glass compressed and exploded beautifully in all directions - big pieces, small pieces, and a nice little back-lit burst of fine dust.
This photo was taken at ISO 800, f/1.8, 1/1250 using four 120w light bulbs pointed right at the glass and two 60w blue bulbs to create the blue backlighting. Five wine glasses gave their lives for the creation of this photograph.
TIPS: Use a tripod and set your camera on continuous shooting. Wear safety goggles.
