Soggy Squirrel

The red squirrel is native to Britain, but its future is increasingly uncertain as the introduced American grey squirrel expands its range across the mainland. There are estimated to be only 140,000 red squirrels left in Britain, with over 2.5 million greys.

I agree with Glenn...what a wonderful capture. Soo much story telling in this image, especially in that adorable expression on this cute little critters face - certainly looks as though he KNOWS his kind is facing extinction..really pulls at the heart strings. I know that if this image were the flagship image of a fundraiser to Save the Red Squirrel, I'd HAVE to give, lol! Great, great image...

I wonder why. I know our grey squirrels are quite aggressive and tenacious. What is the temperament of your reds?

Strange because the Red squirrels here are a fiesty bunch. I have seen them run off the grays man times. They are pretty fearless. Good shot.

When we lived in Indianapolis, we brought pecans back at Christmas from the trees in our yard at our house in Louisiana. We had two red squirrels such as this, Oswald and Reina, who gorged on the treats. They'd be generally obnoxious, running to the porch and over my arm, every time I ventured out. They became surly and demanding. This may well have been linked to profound self-image problems, as their girth expanded, and they became unable to move quickly anymore. They became, hands down, the most obese and burly creatures in squirreldom. Truly, they had rolls of fat, and I became concerned that PITA or someone would come give me a brisk handslap. But it was a brutal winter that year, and they made it, spawning several genreations of little babes who also came to feed on our porch. It was squirel heaven, til, of course our cats discovered...........That's a sweet reminder I get from this image. It is lovely and so sharp.
