This photo was taken on Kiawah Island, SC, which is twenty minutes south of Charleston, SC. One day while walking on the beach there were hundreds of starfish laying out on the shore. Some trying to make it back to the water and some that didn't make it in time. This one that I shot had one of his legs raised up acting as a call for help, an act of despondency. In the background is my mother walking obliviously away from the starfish. This starfish was so fresh to the world unknown to him, outside the water. After taking a few shots I gently picked him up and laid him in the shallow waters of the ocean. Sympathy set in for me.
