Abandoned Leper Colony, Apr 2006

Abandoned Leper Colony. It was in use up until around 1984.

It is on the Island Chacachacare, about 5 miles west of the mainland and very close to Venezuela. It is Trinidad Territory

It was used as a hide out and launching for raids during the Venezuela war of Independence 1813, by various rebels and even Simon Bolivar.

Unfortunately a beautiful island is being ruined with litter and garbage. It is supposed to be a national park, but as usual an inneffective goverment is not policing it or putting it to potential use.

Last year the University of The West Indies, had a photo outing here. They were charged $1,500. They took along garbage bags to clean up some of the mess, but it was a spoonfull in a swimming pool.
