What I think really draws me in (on top of technical excellence and I'll get to that) is that, given how this decade's gone, it seems like "firefighter standing in front of burnt-down such-and-such" has become its own genre, one that's easy to bog down in too much sentimentality and become clichéd. This photo doesn't do that at all, which makes it all the more powerful, doing a better job at conveying what all the cliché photos try to convey.
Here's what I mean: The firefighter's body language is very relaxed. I get the idea that the fire is under control, or the team has at least done what they can. So here's this guy, he's surveying the damage, taking it all in. You've got it framed that it's very empty, which... you know, something has burned down, there's now nothing where there was something. If you hadn't mentioned this was a warehouse fire, I'd really have no idea what had burned down. And this firefighter, he's okay with this, or at least resolved. I imagine he sees a lot of destruction and acceptance of this comes easier... which says more about the profession than any photo where it's all, "hey look, they saved the kitten, or the baby, or the old woman, how *heroic*." No, this is more about the day in, day out handling the fact that things do not last, which takes a strength no less valuable and worthy.
Compositionally, you got the texture of the smoke which is just enough, you give it just enough space, the focus is just right, the sepia tone is totally appropriate... hell yeah, Cody, you nailed it. -

Amazing!! I don't want to bore you with a huge paragraph comment, but i might end up doing just that... this makes me think about a lot that has happened in the past decade. During 9/11 i had an uncle of mine working in the pentagon, which scared me to death. Also, I was present at the Sofa Superstore fire in Charleston, SC, which made national headlines, and I saw the roof collapse which (unbeknown to me at the time) resulted in the nine firefighters' deaths. Amazing, thought-provoking photo!

This photo stuck out so much, it so technically accurate, deeply personal and evocative. You can almost see some resemblance of fear by the tilt of his helmet, which is quickly removed by the movement from subject to content. I however, don't consider this democratic, it doesn't fit here for me. Please don't take that the wrong way, you know I like it.
