The Fluvarium: one small environmental miracle

Many rivers and surrounding habitats have been seriously damaged by urban development. A group of concerned Canadians in St. John’s, Newfoundland organized to restore and enhance that city's freshwater resources. They have succeeded in bringing the Atlantic Salmon back from the sea to spawn in the city for the first time in 60 years.
They have also been responsible for the construction of an environmental interpretation centre. The Fluvarium raises awareness of the nature of freshwater systems, provides leadership in urban watershed management, and operates as a public centre for environmental education. Nine windows deep underground look into a watercourse in the heart of St John’s.
To quote from their brochure: “Brown trout, salmon parr, mink, muskrat and other aquatic creatures can be seen in their natural environment through these windows. There are three distinct habitats: a shallow pool with slow moving water, a riffle area for spawning, and a deep pool. The Fluvarium looks different in every season, the slanting sunlight through the water in summer, spawning activity in the fall, life under the ice in winter, and the hatching of eggs in the spring.”
