Take a look at the EFS 17-85 mm with stabilizer (IS); a great overall workhorse lens for the price; nice self portrait; Canon looks good on you :) :)

It works for 80% of my shots. You'll hear that Sigma makes junk but they have a junk line and a high-end line. This one's the high-end line. You can zoom in on flowers or zoom in on something far away with one lens and it doesn't get spherical when zooming like a lot lesser wide range zooms. Plus the image stablization comes in handy when doing longer shutter speeds in dark situations (like when taking pictures of bands performing). -
