Rites of Passage I
He doesn't use the pedals yet. He just straddles the seat, and shuffles his feet, propelling himself and the bike along the sidewalk at a snail's pace, leaning crazily to one side or the other.
I'm content to let him keep his feet on the ground for now, because I know that all too soon, he will find his wheels, and then his wings. So I plod along beside him, used Kleenex in my pocket and muddy shoe prints on my jeans, and save up these rainy day reflections for the day when I am earthbound in the face of his flight, eyes turned up to sky, marveling at his wingspan but missing those training wheels just a little bit.
