Siem Reap (River)
December, 2007; this photograph was taken in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where no law currently exists to prohibit dumping of raw sewage into the Tonle Sap river. Directly connecting with the Tonle Sap- Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake- the river serves as a source for community ground wells and the local fishing industry. Siem Reap's fresh water concerns also include the depletion of local aquifers beneath the Angkor Wat Historical Park; an issue greatly affecting the future structural integrity of the city's landmark temples. While many responsible tourism initiatives have been adopted by hotels in the area, large volumes of tourists and poor local infrastructure have imposed threatening consequences on the future of Cambodia’s fastest growing city.
