Accidental Tourist

In Southern California, I happened across this small mosque unexpectedly on a tiny residential street in a neighborhood I thought I knew fairly well.. The stark white paint glowed in the first light on the first of the day of the year. The walls around it gave the feeling of a fortress.

I didn't notice that there was someone standing watch across the street until after I'd taken this photograph. The consternation on his face told me that there have been tense times worshiping here in post 9/11 America. I focused pleasant energy in his direction. I am not Muslim, but everyone understands a smile. I nodded. He nodded and smiled. I mouthed Happy New Year not daring to interrupt the singing birds or break the silence of the 6 o'clock hour from 50ft away.

The lighting, the colors, mood of tranquility captured well. This is special stuff.
