The Apollo 11 mission was the fifth human spaceflight of the Apollo program and the third human voyage to the moon. On July 16, 1969, it carried Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene 'Buzz' Aldrin, Jr. On July 20, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon. Collins remained in orbit above.
In a 1961 speech, President John F. Kennedy proposed; "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth". In 1969 he delivered. The mission had been accomplished.
In an interview shortly after the Apollo 11 mission's completion, Neil Armstrong made a joke with a group of reporters. It is unclear from the recording what the question is, but Neil Armstrong replies, "I raised my thumb and it covered the earth."
