Tobacco Farming

Tobacco. The American Colonies' first super successful commodity, grown in Virginia and shipped to Scotland for sale in Europe. Such an important commodity that even during the wars between the colonies and Europe for their independence, shipments of tobacco were guaranteed a certain number of ships per year by escort. This photo shows how tobacco was grown in the left foreground. It was not cultivated in rows as we see modern crops but in individual "humps" for each plant. In the background you see a recreation of a plantation house typical for the period (1600s).
