Invented in 1947 through the teamwork (and competitive egos) of John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley and later changed to an integrated circuit (like the one pictured here) by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce, the transistor changed the world of electronic design. Unlike vacuum tubes, transistors were more efficienct, more robust, many times smaller, and much easier to manufacture. The transistor makes all modern electronics possible and is a critical tool in electronic design
