Known to most Chinese as Chang Jiang (Long River), the 3,937-mile long Yangtze River is a central to the livelihood of both urban and rural populations. Whole neighborhoods such as this one were demolished by the government as part of the monumental Three Gorges Dam project.
This photo of the city of Wushan was made one month before the first flood stage in June 2003 created a vast reservoir lake nearly 400 miles long and covered this neighborhood with 50 meters of water.
