Portland, OR, has a Last Thursday Art Walk on NE Alberta St. Hundreds (maybe thousands?) of people frequent this event and activities range from official gallery openings, poetry readings in the street, music performances on corners, to craft booth sales.
The city doesn't charge anyone to set up a booth to sell goods. Sellers only have to check with the boutiques that they set up in front of. Therefore you see a wide array of goods including potholders, jewelry, artwork, CD's, clothing, and nik-naks.
In this photo, Nikki and Chad are selling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from Nikki's 2nd story apartment fire escape. After selling out of sandwiches, Nikki gave out "free mohawks" on the street corner. About 10 people actually stopped and let her shave their hair into a mohawk.
