Veteran's Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Poppy Day
Taken in my yard this spring. A fitting image for the day.
From Flanders fields to Georgetown, Texas:
These poppies that grow in Georgetown, Texas, have their origins in the fields of Flanders, Belgium, where they grow in profusion.
Henry Purl Compton, known as “Okra” was one of Georgetown’s sons who served in the army in France during World War I. Compton brought back to his mother some seeds of the Flanders poppy.
Mrs. Compton planted these seeds, which not only grew on the slopes of her property on East 7th Street, but spread through the community with the help of birds, bees and people.
The poppies of Flanders were made famous in this poem:
In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872 – 1918)
Canadian Army
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The light and shadows on the poppies is wonderful. I love the image. I've always loved the poem and started reciting it in my head before I scrolled down to see that you had posted it. When I was a child, they used to sell the paper poppies for veteran's day.

Thanks everyone.
Mary: I also remember the paper poppies as a child. It was such a special day. I lived in Canada back then, and we called it Poppy Day.
Leslie: this was taken under the oaks in my back yard, late in the day. Hence the low light, and dappled light too. Thanks. -
