This was taken about a week ago as the leaves started to fall good. When I started to take this photo the Lady Bud was completely on top of the Horny Bug and as I was trying to compose a shot she moved over to the side. If anyone knows what kind of bug this Horny Bug is PLEASE let me know. Also I did not know a Lady Bug would eat another bug other than aphids. Is this really what she is doing? Eating this other bug? Please inform me! Thank you for looking!

Wow! I always heard that lady bugs were good to have in the garden, but I 've never seen them actually eat another bug! This is very cool!

Awesome macro shot! As far as I know, ladybugs eat the bad bugs in your garden. I never heard that they only munch on aphids. LOL What a boring diet that would be. ROTF

This is a species of tick, I believe, and, if so, it is another reason to love lady bugs! This is one of the nicest thematic macros I have seen at JPG, and the narrative is just right! (Don't ya love Susan D's comment?)

Susan Littlefield gave props (27 Oct 2009):
That's actually a lady beetle larva, which is an immature ladybug. So I imagine the ladybug is saying, 'you need to get that room cleaned and finish your homework, and no, you may not go to Billy's house tonight'!

Yes, I agree with Susan's ID---looks like a lady beetle larva to me. However, I must disagree with conclusion about what's going on in that picture. ;-) They do cannabilize each other, especially if food supplies are low. AWESOME picture, Karen!

I believe that is a larval stage ladybug. Why the ladybug was all over it, and what it was doing, I have no idea. However, I do know that this is one fabulous macro. Excellent shot, Karen.

Fantastic capture, Karen!!! Wonderful macro. I never thought I'd be wondering about this matter, but here is what google says about ladybugs dinner preferences:

Okay, now I'll post what Google says...."Lady beetles, both adults and larvae, are known primarily as predators of aphids (plant lice), but they prey also on many other pests such as soft-scale insects, mealybugs, spider mites and eggs of the Colorado Potato Beetle and European Corn Borer. A few feed on plant and pollen mildews. One larva will eat about 400 medium-size aphids during its development to the pupal stage. An adult will eat about 300 medium-size aphids before it lays eggs. About three to ten aphids are eaten for each egg the beetle lays. More than 5,000 aphids may be eaten by a single adult in its lifetime. The lady beetle's huge appetite and reproductive capacity often allow it to rapidly clean out its prey."

Awesome capture precisely because the ladybug appears to be eating the other bug. Did not know they were doing that neither..

Cool shot, Karen. I think Susan Littlefield was the closest. I believe it's the empty skin of the pupa stage of a lady bug. I'm betting that's the adult that just emerged from the pupa. It's a great image, Karen. R
