I consider this one of the tougher lightpaintings I've done. This spot was attempted on more than one occasion, with spectacular failure each and every time. With the foreground being pitch black, and the background being well lit by a natural beam of sunlight, I had to find a balanced exposure. I also happen to have a personal bias against HDR, so that was out of the question. My first few attempts with the slave flash lit up the reflectors around the cone, and distracted the eye away from the rest of the image. The next few were un-balanced and poorly lit. The final combination turned out to be one flash on the left, behind the struts, one on the right, also behind the struts, and a final flash from 10 feet back bounced off of the ground 3 feet in front of the camera. This in turn lit up the ceiling as well as missing the cone. Problem solved.
Island Station, an abandoned coal fired power plant that became obsolete before it was finished being constructed.
