The Honey Pile!

Honey Fungus-Armillaria mellea

I drove over one hundred miles through four counties yesterday, visiting several woods and spending over six hours walking through them,on a fruitless search for fungi.Meanwhile no more than five miles from home this huge pile of Honey fungi was lurking at the side of the road! I got some rather strange looks from passing motorists while I lay on the ground to take a few snaps!

The Honey or Boot-lace fungus is edible if cooked and eaten in small quantities.Apparently it is mildly poisonous if eaten raw and can produce quite severe gastric problems if too much of the cooked fungi is eaten. My advice would be to buy your mushrooms from the supermarket and leave these for the slugs to eat.

It is also fatal to trees causing a white rot with no cure and is responsible for the loss of large quantities of commercial timber.

Thanks for looking :)

LOL @ the vision you conjure up in my mind of you lying by the roadside with your camera. Thank you so much for not caring what they thought, and forging ahead with your photographing!! Once again, an incredible capture, and good information as well.

Wow, your mushrooms collections are incredible. I think you should consider publishing a book on this subject in addition to your wonderful churches images? Thank you for always sharing your find and knowledge. Great work, MM!

Another whizzer of a shot -- good onya Martin! I love that advice you give too, and there's no way I would ever touch any wild ones. Actually I don't even like the ones from shops, so my digestive system is pefectly safe from assault in that form:-)
