The Sacrifice
This is a view of the CCTV HQ project in Beijing's Central Business District. The TVCC, the building on the left, was gutted in a spectacular fire on the evening of Feb. 9, 2009 when the CCTV site managers decided to hold an illegal fireworks display against the advice of Beijing fire officials. But "We're CCTV and we can do anything" won the day and they destroyed their own building along with the life of a young firefighter. CCTV, the muscled arm of China's Propaganda Ministry, has since restructured in hopes of finding responsible leadership as they try to regain the support of the people, a battle they seem to be dead set on losing. The manageers who destroyed years of work costing hundreds of millions of dollars are now lost somewhere in the penal system after a spaghettied mess of corruption, shadow companies and crony contracts rose to the surface when someone started looking a little harder at the unwitting arsons. Rumors have it that the best construction company in Beijing ended up building the landmark CCTV Bldg. (r), though the TVCC was supposedly under the direction of a much lesser qualified construction group. At least that's the world on the street.
