The Ramadan Singer
Submitted to On Stage Sponsored by New York Institute of Photography
Though the tent makes this scene look like it happens under some star-lit plain, in reality this is downtown Istanbul, in the Hippodrome area in front of the Blue Mosque. It was Y2K: December 31st, 1999, and it was the holy season of Ramadan. The hippodrome was set up as a sprawling carnival for people to celebrate after the day's fast. This folk singer had the audience in rapture as Ataturk gazed at part of the nation he forged. It was an amazing scene to witness.
