Now I'm curious, and need to find out what this is. My son found one on the sidewalk yesterday. It smelled terribly, he said. I didn't give that a try, took him for his word. Great capture, Susan! You're good with the close ups. I'll let you know if I find out what it is.

Manon....I did not find my caterpillar, but just spent the most amazing half hour looking at the photos on that site. This fellow is an incredibly gifted photographer. Everyone should take some time and go through his photos; you will be amazed!
Thanks for the link!! -
Eivor Kuchta said (20 Sep 2009):
OK, I'm pretty sure this must be some kind of Tiger Swallowtail caterpillar. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.

Thanks, ladies.....Eivor, you were absolutely correct, and Cindy--thank you for the link! I had Googled Tiger Swallowtail, but none of the images matched the one you provided, which was perfect!

Wow,! this is an incredible caterpillar....quite a big boy! A very comical looking find!

Judy Wanamaker gave props (20 Sep 2009):
It is certainly colorful. Judging by the size, I would expect it to spin a cocoon soon. If you are lucky, you may see what emerges. Cool shot.

Wow! What a brill caterpillar! When you told me he held one I imagined one of those little green ones, not a huge fat colourful one! Suuuuuuper! (Soo glad he didn't squash it, by the way -- it's too beautiful for that!)

That's a Western Tiger Swallowtail larva (Papilio rutulus), which is a different species than the Eastern one. Nice shot, Susan.

You got a perfect ID on this. Now, place it in a butterfly cage, with food, and watch it emerge as a beautiful butterfly. I have an image of a giant swallowtail. The metamorphosis is awesome From this to that beautiful winged creature.
