This is Badwater in Death Valley, where water manages to flow, oblivious of the 120 degree temperature and cracked salty ground. At dawn the mountains' shadows race across the flats and the heat rises from a breezy 90 degrees to a blistering 120. It is the most inhospitable, unbearable, and painfully beautiful place I've ever been.
