This is an especially sad site to me. I grew up here. Once a thriving textile mill town 75 plus years ago. Now ALL the industry is gone and all the stores too. This is the WATER TOWER that once stood proudly over a town to proud of. The building below was originally the Company Store. It was built in 1910. Later it became the Belk's Department Store. Now a shell of a building as is the entire town. BUT if you notice the town still flies the American Flag PROUDLY! Long May She Wave!

Fabulous entry. I love your angle on your photo, and how you included the flag. It adds to the poignancy of this all too common view. Excellent work, Karen.

The decay of the building and that of the water tower are obvious.
What isn't so obvious is the decay of hope and prosperity for a generation of blue collar Americans.
We here in the Rust Belt are approaching the 32nd anniversary of "Black Monday" Sept.19th 1977.
Many residents still living in the Mahoning Valley compare the devastation of the giant Youngstown Sheet&Tube steel mill closing to the original "Day of Infamy" December 7th 1941.
On Sept.19th 1977 4000+ men and women reported to the Campbell Works to begin their shifts only to find the gates of the behemoth facility pad locked.
Without any announcment or warning more than a half century of steel production and full employment came to an abrupt and tragic end.
One by One as other steel mills and related industries locked down and locked out their work forces by the hundreds and in many cases thousands the Mahoning Valley watched 100 years of our proud heritage decay and rust.
Your Home Town Hit Home!!
Both excellent and sad
