Barringer Meteor Crater, Arizona
Taken from the rim of the crater 160 feet above the desert floor and nearly 600 feet above the center of the crater, this photo is composed of six images stitched together. Nearly a mile across, the is one Big Hole!
The Barringer Meteor Crater is believed to have been excavated about 50,000 years ago by a meteorite/asteroid made of nickel-iron. Weighing in at an estimated 300,000 tons and measuring about 150 feet wide, the impact of about 2.5 megatons of TNT was about 150 times the force of of the A-Bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. Check it out in the lightbox view.
