Walnut Canyon Trail
There is a water table/reservoir about 3 or 4 miles from my house. I used to drive by it everyday to work. As I drove by, I always thought to myself that it might make a nice place to ride my bike and take photos. So, today being the first day in weeks with a little sun shine, I grabbed my bike and camera and headed for it.
The ride to the reservoir was rather strenuous, uphill the whole way. When I finally made it to the reservoir I was heartily disappointed. The trail around the water was completely paved, and not to mention crowded with locals taking an after work walk. Not what I was expecting at all. Not wanting to make a complete waste of my difficult uphill three mile ride to get to the place, I decided to do a few laps around the paved trail. On my third lap around, I thought I'd stop and take a panoramic shot of the reservoir. Then, as I was just about to pack up, I noticed a mile post marker sticking out of some cactus down the cliff (I forgot to mention that the reservoir sits atop the hills). I went down to examine the mile marker and to my delight found an excellent trail! A dirt trail, surrounded by shrubs and cacti. Now that is what I was expecting.
So, I spent a good hour riding around the little trail. It was a decent ride, a few good steep turns and such. The biggest challenge was tucking my legs in so as not to get caught on pointy cacti. Eventually I found a sign labeling the trail as "Walnut Canyon." I didn't have time to see how far the trail goes, but you can bet I am going back to explore the next time Mr. Sunshine comes out (which shouldn't be too long, I do live in California).
