Transport Exceptionals
French choreographer Dominique Boivin was not exactly being transported anywhere, although he did get "around".
Throughout, he remained on an open field in the suburban town of Tampines, Singapore, surrounded by a mass rapid transit train station and shopping malls.
But he certainly "transported" dance to a new level with this exceptional performance, where he danced with an excavator, to the accompaniment of operatic arias sung by Maria Callas.
Again, this was a performance I nearly missed. At the last minute, I decided to catch a taxi there, even though Tampines is quite far from my home and the fare would be considerable.
I figured it would be worth it. Transport Exceptionals as his dance was called, certainly was worth the rush and the expense.
Pity, though, that most of the people in the vicinity, possibly more than 99.9 percent, were inside the surrounding shopping malls during this modern romance between iron and flesh.
So much for the Singapore Arts Festival reaching out to the so-called Heartlanders. The Great Singapore Sale was by far the greater attraction!
