New Orleans after Katrina. As one of the responders I was able to get a few photos. Most are like everyones elses, destruction and water. This photo would appear to be more of the same. It is taken outside the Convention Center where so many people stayed for days. But the truth here is that there were no spare tires and no gas in the first few days,so as cars became disabled parts were taken off and gas siphoned to keep some police cars operating. I was shocked by what I saw there. The smells, the damage, the people who stayed behind. It reminded me of a bad B movie. Cars left abandoned in the streets. whole neighborhoods abandoned, business's looted. It was unreal, and yet I was seeing it and smelling it and hearing it. It was real!
In the Hurricane Katrina, one of many stories of that event. photo essay.

Thanks for sharing these photos. People need constant reminders that these people still need our help.
