Probably one of my first real "breakthrough" photos. Yes, it is real. It was taken during an evening storm with loads of cloud to cloud lightning. Only editing used was to recover the lightning from over-exposed areas (specifically right above the tree).

A little about the technique:
You don't need any fancy equipment. This was taken with a point and shoot. First, I half-pressed the shutter button to focus the shot on the dark sky (it'll take your camera a couple seconds to do this, so be sure to have the shot focused before you see the lightning. Otherwise, you'll be too late). Then, just wait for the lightning! The moment you see any flash in the sky, click. And stay still, we don't want any blurry lightning bolts.
If you have something like a DSLR, it's a bit easier. Just set your shutter to 30 seconds and wait for the lightning to come to you.
