A wide variety of thermotolerant and thermophilic microscopic organisms thrive in Yellowstone's geothermal features. Thermophilic bacteria and archaea are often brightly colored by photosynthetic pigments (chlorophylls or carotenoids) and show distinct zonations according to their specific temperature tolerances.
