I took this whilst studying for a journalism related degree, then printed it in the darkroom, while the light was harsh, it was midday and unposed, demonstrations during the poiltical changeover in South Africa provided an interesting opportunity to do some character studies. The contrast of the ancient world to the modern, the traditional with the banal, is offset by the haunting detrmination in this warriors eyes.
This is the face of quiet determination, resolution rather than hopefulness. He is a Zulu, a member of the Inkata Freedom Party or IFP.
His dress suggests that he is not of noble birth as leopard skin, rather than zebra would have been used.
